No more Shake plugin available? What happened?

Haven't you heard? Shake has been discontinued by Apple. Yes, they are still selling it, but there is no further development or support. When we requested a renewal of our Shake licenses, we did not receive what was needed to continue development. Without Apple's support, there is not much we can do. For those who have already purchased our Silhouette Shake plug-in, we will offer those users a complimentary nodelocked version of the Silhouette Roto standalone for each Silhouette Shake plug-in that they purchased. We will do this once Silhouette 2.3 is released--which won't be too much longer.

However, we continue to support Shake via the Shake SSF shape format. You can import your Silhouette shape name, shape locked/unlocked, shape opacity, shape visibility, motion blur on/off, shutter angle, and shutter phase into a Shake RotoShape node.

Ah, yes, of course. :p

Unfortunately it hasn't caused Genarts or ReVision to lower their prices on Shake plugins. They are still expensive for us "little" guys. My thoughts are that even though Shake will be replaced (hopefully Apple @ NAB unveils something) it will continue to have presence for a while. It's a great app.. Not all of us are ready to abandon Shake just yet. I know it seems silly so invest money into an app with no further development, but there is no replacement yet. We're in limbo. Dante's Inferno.

Have you tried nuke? It's fantastic.

nuke rules - but it's also like 5,000 for 1 license...

Any chance you can include the shake plugin unsupported with the standalone? As with most defunct compositors (Cineon, Illusion, Composer, Eddie, etc...) just because it is discontinued doesn't mean the product isn't useful. Many of us will still be using Shake for another 2-3 years, especially at the $500 price tag it is hard to skip on. Just about every large studio bought the source code from Apple for 50k (ILM, Framestore, etc...), so it probably will be used well beyond the 2-3 years at some studios who are going to continue to upgrade it.

Shake 4.1 on osx doesn't require a license to run and the sdk is freely available on the ADC site. The crossgrade to 4.1 is $49.

That is all well and good for Mac, but what about Linux. Do you have the ability to make us Linux Shake licenses?

I don't know if you missed it in my original post, but I said:

This above solution works for many users. I suppose so well that many found it unnecessary to buy the plug-in version of Silhouette. Either that or they just rendered the files out of Silhouette.

question - did the silhouette shake plugin work with 4.1? or did it need to be recompiled?

The last version of the Silhouette Shake plug-in was compiled for Shake 4.0.

That is all well and good for Mac, but what about Linux. Do you have the ability to make us Linux Shake licenses?Very strange. We just bought a few extra Shake for linux licenses back in the late fall(October I think).

I don't know if you missed it in my original post, but I saidYou seem annoyed that people didn't buy the plugin. Then worst of all, Apple essentially kicked you in the jimmy by EOLing Shake. I understand that, no need to be patronizing though. My point is, you guys already did the work. Why let code go to waste? If it is still useful and you don't want to support it or sell it, atleast give it away to customers who have the standalone. Except for osxintel, the 4.0 plugins will still work in Shake 4.1.

true. since it essentially runs silhouette projects inside of shake and just uses shake for I/O, the plugin would (in theory) update itself with each revision of the standalone.

if it works in 4.1, which some of our stuff did, then you'd be good to go! if nothing else, it could be a value-added piece to drive standalone sales for legacy shake customers.

Has anyone tried the Silhouette 2.2 Shake plugin in 4.1? If it works, maybe there is nothing else we need to do.

I "volunteer" to try it under linux with Shake 4.1 if no one else does. Catch is though that we never got around to purchasing the shake silhouette lics. We do own 8 roto and 4 paint lics though. You can email me at "deke at asylumfx dot com" if interested.

wondering if there has been any update to this thread and if the shake 4 plugin has been tested to work with 4.1?

Hi,

Did anybody successfully use SSF out of V2.3 into
Shake4.1 on OSX?

I tested during beta and it worked. I re-tested now and it still works.
