View Full Version : keyframing corner state

hi guys - would it be possible to be able to keyframe the corner "state" of a bspline point?

so I'm roto'ing along, and my corner all of the sudden gets soft, so I r-click and choose smooth and set it to whatever tension hits the edge.

but now paging back through my spline, that corner has gone soft for the entire duration of my clip. quickly fixed with the multiframe tool, but you know, this was unexpected.

I'm not sure how this is handled in other software. It seems as if they might treat a corner as the extreme of what the tension can handle, as opposed to a different "mode" for the point.

I think a compromise might be to have this attribute keyframeable, so that if I smooth my point halfway through, it's still a corner on previous keyframes.

or I could be missing the point entirely. :p

This has come up before. Making a b-spline point a cusp or not is a discreet and major change to the math. It isn't something that can be tweened. The only way to tween sharpness in a b-spline is the tension (weight) value.

sorry to drudge it up again. will try to find the old posts.

hmmmm... trying to figure this out. so as I was saying - other programs must be not creating corners but instead just really pushing the tension as far as it can go in that direction and calling it a corner?

I assume there's a difference, obviously mathematical - but in appearance as well?

hmmm... I guess I *have* to be cheeky and ask - would it be possible to get a right click option for an "extremely tense corner-like point"? Not wanting to push anyone's buttons, because I know you all are proud of the spline code and I love the fact that it all exports to bezier... but in 99% of all cases, I want a corner point that's editable later on down the line. Not sure how other people feel - again, this could just be a "me" thing and if so I'll just mention it and crawl back into my roto hole. :)

s'pose I could just duplicate the spline, change it to a smooth point, and merge it with the one that had the corner... but that seems counterproductive...

A right menu button option for high tension would be a good idea. Of course, that tension value would tween to surrounding keyframes unless you added keys around the change.

right - that would rock!

I wonder if you could add it to the "alt clicking" cycle of the points as well? Although, there would probably be no way to distinguish it from a true corner point. eh, think about it...
